Will you help save lives this winter?
This winter will be harder than ever for Ukrainians. No heating, no power, and no hope as the war rages on. With temperatures dropping to minus 20 degrees, constant shelling and drone attacks have left older Jewish people alone in their homes, freezing, in pitch-black darkness, unable to cook food or keep their vital medicines fresh. Rolling blackouts leave them disconnected from the outside world, chilled to the bone, and terrified.
With your help, World Jewish Relief will fund warm hubs – safe spaces with power where people can stay warm. We will repair broken windows, provide wood and fuel for fires, winter clothing, and bedding, and help those living on tiny pensions to pay their utility bills.
This winter, Ukrainians need you more than ever.
Will you make a gift today to help them survive the long, hard winter?
Will you keep older Jewish people warm this winter and save lives.
”Every time there is a missile raid my heart drops to my feet.”
Yevdokiya is 89, Jewish and lives alone in Kyiv, Ukraine. She’s seen much in her life but this winter will be the worst she has ever faced.
Resilient, steadfast, and proud, Yevdokiya is going to struggle this winter as temperatures hit minus 20, blackouts and power cuts mean no heating or electricity for long periods of time and her home is damaged by Russian bombs. When the Russians bombed Kyiv in July, her windows were destroyed. Glass shattered everywhere leaving her on the ground covered in blood. She was terrified. For the past few months she has been living without windows, just shards of broken glass – she can’t even imagine what it would be like in the winter months.
Living on just £79 a month, she can’t afford to heat her home let alone fix the bomb-damaged windows. Singing to herself is her only solace when the blackouts come, breaking the silence of her fear.
Your support will mean that Ukrainians like Yevdokiya can make it through this tough winter ahead. Thankfully, we were able to rapidly repair her windows, assist with medical supplies, homecare, and financial aid to pay for electricity so she can heat her home.
“I was beyond happy that my windows were repaired. It brought me so much joy and such a huge relief – both mentally and financially. If they hadn’t been repaired, it would have felt like I’d have to just lie down in a coffin because surviving something like that seemed impossible.”
No matter what hardship Yevdokiya faces this winter she must stay positive to survive the reality that she is facing: “I hold onto the hope, a deep hope, that with the help of the global community, we will get through this winter”. Your support this winter could be the difference between life and death for many older Jewish people like Yevdokiya.
