Cyclone Idai hits Mozambique
More than 1,000 people are feared dead in a devastating cyclone that has hit Mozambique, particularly impacting the country’s central coastal region. The National Disaster Management Institute (INGC) estimates that 600,000 people are currently at risk and in urgent need of humanitarian assistance in the affected areas.
Tropical Cyclone Idai made landfall on Friday 15 March. A more precise death toll and the true scale of the damage is not likely to be known soon, as many areas are cut off. We are currently liaising with networks in Mozambique to gain a deeper understanding of the situation and potential options for a response.
