Late at night on 8th September, Morocco was hit by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake which has already caused over 2,500 deaths, injured many more and affected over 300,000 people.
The epicentre of the quake was in central Morocco in the al-Haouz region of the Atlas Mountains, 44-miles south-west of Marrakesh. The worst affected communities are in hard-to-reach regions of the mountains and so the true extent of the destruction is yet to be realised.
Hundreds of aftershocks, including one of 3.9 magnitude, have caused further damage to already fragile buildings which barely survived the first earthquake. The days that follow are critical for search and rescue operations.
Through trusted partners operating in the region, World Jewish Relief will provide life-saving supplies, including food, water, tents, and medicines, to those within and beyond the Jewish community. Despite the high temperatures during the day, the Moroccan mountain areas are cold at night, and people also need warm blankets and flashlights.
