World Jewish Relief has welcomed a new scheme unveiled today by the Home Office. The Home Secretary and Archbishop of Canterbury have launched a new initiative to encourage community groups to support refugees.

As the media’s attention has casually declined since the 2014 revolution, the daily struggles of Ukrainians have increased. Pre-Maidan, the exchange rate was 8 UAH to the dollar; it’s now 25 UAH. This means that the world’s poorest Jewish communities can now only afford one third of what they used to. Conversely, it also means that your donations go three times further.

In the early 1960s, the Central British Fund for World Jewish Relief (now World Jewish Relief) were still the recipients of West German reparation funds and, in conjunction with the Association of Jewish Refugees, they built a block of studio flats to provide sheltered accommodation for elderly Jewish refugees in London.

In Sundrawoti VDC, Dolakha, where I was visiting for monitoring purposes, the sweetness of Nepali people enveloped and held me. A group of staff from Nyayik Sansar and I had just finished inspecting a number of tomato tunnels. We then had sweet lemon tea and noodles on a rooftop overlooking green hills and puffy, white clouds. After this we went on to a community meeting where I used some rocks to explain how a value chain works.

Vera had not experienced fresh air for three years. Imagine that, not even smelling a flower or hearing the wind whistle through your hair for three years. Incredibly frail, getting down the six flights of steps to her tiny apartment hasn't been possible for years. She couldn't even dream of it.

This week, police in Greece have begun to move refugees staying in Idomeni refugee camp, on the Macedonian border to more formal accommodation elsewhere in Greece. The population of more than 8,000 refugees primarily from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq are in Idomeni because they hoped that the border at Macedonia would re-open and allow them to continue their journey onwards into Europe.
