Mozambique Floods: we are providing urgent aid

Mozambique has been hit by extensive flooding, resulting in loss of life and injury. 71,000 people have been affected with 13,000 homes destroyed or damaged, key infrastuctre is also damaged and thousands of people now have urgent shelter, food and water, hygiene and health needs.

Last year Cyclone Idai hit the same region. We launched an emergency appeal provided life changing assistance to many of the people affected.

Now we have partnered again with ADPP  and also joined forces with Action Aid Mozambique to lead a successful application for START Funds.  Together we are providing urgent aid to 14,500 people in Sofala Province.

Our programme will support 2,900 households with food supplies and hygiene kits. These are families worst-affected by the floods – those who have been displaced and do not have any access to basic items or sources of income. With our targeting we are prioritising vulnerable groups; women (in particular pregnant women and  female headed households), children, people with disabilities, older people.

Our project will focus on:

  • Food distributions which will last one family (of five people) one month.  These will be supplied to every household in three regions; Maringue, Nhamatanda, and Gorogoza and will include rice, beans, oil, salt and sugar.
  • Water, Sanitation and Hygiene kits for 400 families in Maringue who are at high risk of water borne disease. These will include mosquito nets and water purification tablets.
  • For women and girls who are worst affected by the disaster, we are distributing dignity kits with essential hygiene items specifically for women. These include capulana (clothing fabric), soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, sanitary pads, bucket, mat, torch, underwear. In addition, hygiene awareness sensitisation activities will be conducted during the distributions to raise awareness of proper hygiene practises and potential health risks.

The rainy season is still present (lasting until April) so further rains – or extreme weather events like cyclones – could still happen.

We are not launching a wider appeal at this stage. You can support our emergency work by donating a one-off sum or signing up for a monthly direct debit to our Disaster Fund.

The START Fund provides rapid financing for off-the-radar emergencies and to fill critical gaps in humanitarian financing. The multi-donor pooled fund, supported by the British, Irish, Dutch, and Belgium governments and the European Commission, is managed by Humanitarian NGOs delivering the fastest-collectively-owned, early response mechanism in the world. World Jewish Relief have been members since 2016.
