Attending the ‘Stand with Ukraine’ event at the UK Parliament was an incredibly emotional experience – a reminder of the strength that comes from unity during difficult times. The event, hosted by Sarah Sackman, Member of Parliament for Finchley and Golders Green, brought together a wide range of people, including many Barnet-based Ukrainians and local community leaders.
World Jewish Relief had the honour of bringing several STEP Ukraine graduates to the event. Listening to their stories was humbling. Each one of them has faced unimaginable challenges, yet they continue to move forward with strength and determination, rebuilding their lives in the UK
Through STEP Ukraine, World Jewish Relief has helped over 13,000 Ukrainians with essential language and employment support. While the programme – funded by the UK Government and in partnership with the British Council – has now concluded, its legacy lives on in the lives of those it helped.
Sarah Sackman MP acknowledged World Jewish Relief’s long-standing commitment to supporting Ukrainians. In her speech, she said: “It’s significant that World Jewish Relief have helped more than a quarter of a million Ukrainian people, both in Ukraine itself and refugees coming to this country. I wanted to recognise that contribution”.
Her words were deeply affirming, reminding all of us that the impact of this work stretches far beyond numbers – it’s about lives changed and hope restored.
One particularly memorable moment was the performance by the Hlopy Band, whose Ukrainian music filled the room with energy and emotion. Their songs connected us to home – reminding us of our culture, our spirit, and the strength that carries us through even the hardest times.
As a Ukrainian myself, being part of this event was especially emotional. Seeing my community supported so genuinely reminded me that even far from home, we are not alone.
