On March 28, 2025, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar near Sagaing at 12:50pm local time, followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock minutes later. The earthquake has caused damage across Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand, with tremors felt as far as Bangkok.
The full extent of the destruction is not yet known, but there are reports of people stuck under the rubble, following the collapse of buildings and infrastructure. The affected area is home to approximately 6.1 million people.
