As we look from afar and hear fresh news of bombs, shelling, families sheltering in basements and train stations we are extremely distressed. We see people fleeing from war, some leaving behind livelihoods and property, others being too frail or afraid to leave.
But, we can help.
It is fundamental to our Jewish values to give money and items to reach out to others in times of need.
As a community, Barnet Shul wants to raise as much as we can to support World Jewish Relief's Ukraine Emergency Appeal.
Money raised will help to respond to the most urgent humanitarian needs for the worst affected, whether fleeing their homes or unable to flee the violence. WJR is in constant contact with 29 partners in Ukraine who they have worked with for more than 30 years and who understand the most urgent humanitarian needs as they evolve; food, money, medical, material, and psychological support for the worst affected, especially children, families and older people in Ukraine, some of whom are Holocaust survivors.
Their response centres around their 13,000 mostly Jewish existing clients in Ukraine, with a view to extending it to other affected communities. They will support their partner organisations who continue to strive to deliver medical care, home care, companionship and dementia care to older people.
They are also in contact with partners in Moldova and Poland, who are preparing to assist Ukrainians who have fled to these countries and are looking at how they can assist them.
Many of us have great grand-parents and even grandparents from Ukraine and Eastern Europe and sadly, have families who suffered at the hands of the Nazi's and from the terrors of World War II.
We, in Barnet, are privileged to be in a position to help those who are living and displaced and who urgently need our help in Ukraine today.
Please give as generously as you can.
