Despite having recently joined the European Union, Bulgaria’s woes are not yet over. There remains a 14% poverty rate, 20% of all transactions currently take place on the black market and the country is still one of the poorest in Central and Eastern Europe. The majority of Bulgaria’s registered Jews are elderly and alone, reliant upon outside assistance for survival.

Soup Kitchens for Small Communities

Catering for approximately 200 needy elderly Jews, the ten kitchens which are located throughout small provincial communities distribute much needed hot, nutritious food on a daily basis.

The Home provides shelter and round the clock care for the Jewish elderly of Bulgaria. It houses 24 permanent residents and works closely with the day care centre to ensure welfare needs are met.
